This article is part 1 of 8 in a series written by Turing Motor Company’s CEO: Ned Goodhue. This series outlines the Turing Motors approach to bringing level 5 autonomous vehicles to market.

At a Glance

Turing Motor Company will be creating the world’s largest privately-owned test track to develop the foundation of our AI.

Our Test Track will be built on 2,000 acres of land. Its purpose is to use pure AI and common sense to teach our cars how to drive.

Why not use regular streets?

We can create real-world driving conditions such as roundabouts, two-lane highways, parking lots, tunnels, and more on our privately-owned test track. This can be done safely, and we can throw even extreme examples (known as edge cases) at our cars to see how they respond and ensure they can operate safely in any condition.

Several AV teams have used real streets to do their testing, however, none have been able to reach level 5 autonomy. They are limited in what they can do, and safely, on public roads. Difficult situations can only be simulated. Whereas at our test track we can recreate challenging conditions and test in all four seasons.

Our private Test Track will showcase:

  • Real cars driven by hardware
  • At real speeds, including 100MPH
  • No person in any car

Our fully autonomous vehicles will have driven 9 million miles in all driving conditions in just one year. This gives us more experience than nearly any team out there in just one year. We will continuously be testing for improvements.

Our Technology

Our technology is based on AI. Our driving model is based on Unsupervised Machine Learning.

How do we know it will work?

DeepMind is a company in London, UK (owned by Google) that does advanced research in AI.

In 2017 they gave two computers the rules of chess. Nothing else. Then they had the two computers play chess against each other.

In nine hours, the software was playing chess at the level of a Grandmaster.

In our Test Track, we hypothesize it will take up to a year to replicate similar success.

Next time

In the next article of the series, we will discuss our approach to identifying Objects. Our approach is completely different than existing strategies.

With us, it is always pure AI.
